OUR FACILITY We are located on the Burwell-van Lennep Island Farms in Clarke County, Virginia. ![]() Our house was built in the early 1800s. Admit and treatment area Patient records, computer, and video surveillance of some of our patients. ICU Incubators and oxygen for critically ill animals Anesthesia Gas anesthesia is used not just for surgery, but also for exams and treatments to reduce the fear and stress felt by these wild animals. Radiographs and orthopedic surgery are performed at Dr. Burwell's vet clinic 10 minutes away. FLIGHT CAGE Our flight cage is unique because it has a continuous flyway where birds fly in a large circle rather than from end to end of a traditional long narrow flight cage. They receive better conditioning and are less likely to injure themselves in a flight cage like this. Video of red tailed hawks exercising in our flight cage |
The Burwell-van Lennep Island Farms contains 980 acres of land in a coservation land trust. ![]() ![]() We're in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along a mile of Shenandoah River. ![]() There is a pavilion for education programs We use video cameras to watch our patients in their large outdoor cages. When they don't know we're watching them, they display more natural behaviors. LABORATORY In our lab we run blood tests, parasite checks, lead levels, and cytology on our patients at the center. Kennels and Playpens are used for seriously injured and sick animals. Outdoor cages ![]() When animals have recovered enough to start rehabilitation, they are moved outside into larger cages to exercise before release ![]() |
